How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or audikey a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your vehicle. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor Audikey for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the audi key blade 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
