The term utopia, in fact, evokes images of a paradise. While not all utopias are infused with religious overtones, they often include motifs from paradise. They are also designed to attain some of the characteristics and attributes of paradise in reality.

The word paradise has multiple meanings however, they all refer to the state or condition that is awe-inspiring and enthralling. It could also refer to a place that is ideal for a particular activity or a particular hobby. For example the golfer's paradise or a hummingbird's. In a religious sense, it can refer to heaven as the place where the righteous go after they die.

Many languages have utilized the word paradise, but it was first used in the ancient Iranian language of Avestan. The word is pairidaeza, or "walled enclosure," from the roots pairi, "around," and daeza, "wall." It became part of the Hebrew and other Aramaic texts as paradeisos, and later adapted to Greek which later became paradise.

In the Bible The Bible teaches that the Garden of Eden is paradise. It was a beautiful place where the first couple lived, free of illness and death. When they rebelled against God and sinned they lost their paradise. In later Bible prophecies, heaven is portrayed as a place in the eschatological future, where a happy humanity will live for eternity. The term "paradise" can also be used to describe an emotional or spiritual state that is full of joy and happiness.

A place to Play

Totopia is a brand new addition to the Children's Museum of Sonoma County, opening this week inside their west Santa Rosa campus. It's a room that's part of their well-known Science and Imagination gallery, intended for toddlers and infants up to 35". The exhibit space includes a storybook cabin where you can enjoy a cup of tea with bears as well as a lillypad play area and the ball wall.
