How to Replace an Audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

renault-logo-evolution.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car key replacement audi will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, car key cover audi and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. It is a crucial part of the audi tt key programming's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. If this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig, and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This part is common across the audi keys replacement cost 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.smart-logo.png
