There is a national shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems as well as an increased demand in the world.

Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This will include a medical history and an assessment using the standard ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

Following your assessment you will be informed whether medication may be beneficial in your case. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which can take place in person, by video link or by phone). Your doctor will go over the different options for medication available. If you decide to begin medication, we will offer you the option of titrating your dose to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This is a process which could take a few weeks, and involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication slowly until the right balance is achieved. It is not unusual to need to adjust two or three medicines before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It's important for parents to be involved in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behaviour to let the doctor know whether the medication what is titration in adhd working or causing side effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment you will be issued an individual prescription for your medication. You will be required to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed you will be able to book follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist as appropriate. Usually the appointment will take place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it might be possible to schedule an audio only consultation (again at an extra cost).

In this session, we'll discuss any treatment options and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration program. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage and a discussion around any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration sessions is PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any medication costs.

The psychiatrist will also ask you about your family history and the impact your ADHD symptoms have on your life, as well as any relationship issues you might be facing or any other mental health issues you may be suffering from. This is due to the fact that ADHD is an inheritable condition, and it is important that we assess any family history that could indicate whether you are at risk of developing the disorder.

It is essential that you are honest and truthful with your doctor during the assessment, since the information they get will be used to determine whether your ADHD fits the diagnostic criteria. We suggest that if you are unsure about your preferences, talk with your GP prior to scheduling your private appointment. Certain providers have different policies on whether or not they require the submission of a GP letter. Make sure that your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them once you leave the clinic for prescription medication.

Medication

For many who wish to obtain a private diagnosis of ADHD treatment is a key part of their journey. It isn't always easy to obtain prescriptions from psychiatrists on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long and GPs might be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

You will need to complete forms that vary by doctor but the most frequent ones are self-reporting questionnaires and medical histories going to your childhood and into adulthood. These forms will allow your doctor to determine if there are reasons that suggest you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication, when they've been prescribed.

If you are being titrated on medication, it will typically consist of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. The combination will be carefully tested and monitored to determine the most effective combination for you, taking into consideration any current conditions you suffer from. The frequency of your follow-up appointments is contingent on the type and quantity of medication that you are taking. They could be scheduled monthly or quarterly.
