Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.
Items with weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into stronger bases. Items with strong bases, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies, or obtained as a reward for missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.
To upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the player has to select it, and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen that shows what the expected upgrade stats will be and also the component or material needed to make that happen.
There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a type restriction. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other kind of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix at the end of the item upgrader's name. For instance, adding a Glyph could transform a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph, the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, except for inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from the previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level however, the materials needed aren't as high. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of these items, instead of spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
This allows the item to receive new upgrade components and a higher chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy, and it resets to 0 in the event of failure, or increases when the upgrade is successful.
After a piece has been upgraded to its highest level, it can receive an affix to increase its capabilities. The number of affixes available is determined by the item's type. For instance an uncommon or rare weapon with a base that is normal will have only two affixes for it, while legendary armors can have up to eight affixes available for it.
Each upgrade will require a specific amount of Flightstones or Crests, based on the type of item at its current level and in what slot it is placed in. Weapons will typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.
If an item doesn't reach its maximum level, the NPC offers the player the option to transfer it to a new character and re-infuse the item with a different set of upgrades. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of materials however it will result in a lower chance of success.
Engineers will utilize a level to compare the height of the building to an established point, like an existing benchmark. This method is known as a "level loop." It involves taking readings with the level, backsighting rod and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method helps ensure that buildings are built to a high standard of safety and accuracy.

Reroll tokens are earned by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can then be used to upgrade the original item or another similar item. Recyclable items come with an indicator of the level which shows how much of the upgrade gauge is filled. The rarity and cost of upgrading an item will determine the level of filling.
In the past, some upgrade items had priority affixes which made them easier to roll for than other. This meant that you'd receive the stats most important to your build more frequently than other items. This included things like the armor's total armor, thorns, and control impaired duration reduction stats or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.
This was changed with the recent patch. Priority affixes were removed and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling for each stat. This can be either good or bad, depending on what you're looking for and want from your equipment.
Each upgraded item could be equipped with a special, fixed-value bonus that increases its power by a certain percentage. These bonuses are offered over the standard affixes. The more you upgrade an item, the higher the chance of receiving a unique bonus.
The game also features various sets which grant a set bonus when three or more upgraded items from the same set are placed on a unit. This is a good method of giving an individual character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players reroll their weapons and gear particularly in the beginning stages. This is because rerolling can provide a much faster route to a more powerful character, allowing them to reach high tiers and progress the game faster.

To see if an item is worth upgrading, players should click the Upgrade button on the screen for their character. The item upgrader mod's attributes will be displayed together with any required items. To upgrade the No-mouth Face for instance, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, along with 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards. Players can also check the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.
Generally speaking generally speaking, jewelry and weapons offer more value for trade when they are fully upgraded than armor.
