Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

graco-ezlite-ultimate-easy-to-use-lightwIt's easy to move around with a lightweight double pushchair, especially if you have children of varying age groups. They're generally easy to fold, steer, and carry up and down the stairs.

This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also features adjustable reclining, large UPF 50+ canopy and peekaboo windows. It also has an expanding frame size to accommodate the second car seat or a second passenger.

Side-by-Side

The majority of the light double pushchairs that we tested were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can sit up without assistance, as they aren't as likely to have car seat compatibility. That said they do have a few advantages. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer adjustable recline in both seats, a large canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. They're also easy to maneuver despite their larger footprint and are perfect for parents who worry about fitting through doorways.

The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its clever frame that expands in width to accommodate an additional seat, making it smaller than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating available. It can fit through standard doors and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It's also a jogger, which is great news for those who want to use it with a baby carrier or infant car seat. It's available in a variety of fun colors.

The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another great side-by-side, lightweight double stroller double. It allows for an even greater degree of customization due to a modular frame. The innovative design allows you to convert it into a double or single buggy by adding two carrycots or child car seats. It can even accommodate twins. It's a fantastic and practical choice for families with growing children and the UPPAbaby is one of the lightest and most stylish umbrella strollers around.

Try the egg2 which folds down to the size and weight of a compact suitcase. It can be used either as a double or single by adding 2 carrycots or baby car seats. Our home testers were impressed with how easy it was to move around even with a load of children.

Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't 100% foolproof, however- if your children are of the same age or stage they may still fight over who rides in which seat. If they're at different heights, it is possible that a tandem design is ideal for them as it allows them to face eachother.

Tandem

While side-by-side models may be better suited for siblings with similar ages, tandem lightweight double pushchairs offer their own perks. They can accommodate a larger car seat, and some come with convertible seats or an additional carrycot in the middle. They tend to be more spacious and easier to move into and out of the baskets, though they are usually smaller than those of single buggies. Many also feature more generously big canopies with windows that peek out and a cup holder for the parent and padding for the legs of children.

The iCandy Peach tandem is another great example of a lightweight tandem that is a great value. The fabrics are less expensive than some of our top-rated doubles. However, it looks fantastic and is simple to use. One of the most impressive aspects about it is its one-handed fold. While it requires practice, Kirstie in our Lab said it's "genius". The carrycot is not foldable while it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is simple and quick.

Tandem lightweight double pushchairs will generally make more precise turns than side-by-side models, but they can be more difficult to drive over uneven surfaces and curbs. They are also slower to accelerate and are heavier to move. This can put stress on your back.

Another option is a convertible double buggy, which starts off as an individual and then you can add adapters to make it into a double. These can include the option of a second seat or carrycot in the front, or the children can be seated side-by-side. Some have the option of including a buggyboard, which assists an older child to keep up with younger siblings or brothers.

The Uppababy Vista V2 can be transformed into a twin-sized pushchair by purchasing additional cocoons for PS59 each. These cocoons create an area that is flat for newborns. These can be placed side by side or attached to one another and you can use them in conjunction with the infant car seat that comes with the pushchair twin (as long as you choose a compatible one). Because they're made from high-quality materials, these buggies that are dual-use can be used for many years without displaying much wear, meaning they have high potential for resale.

Single-to-Double

This light double buggy is designed for outdoor-loving family who are looking to upgrade from an individual-stroller. It can be converted into a jogger with the kit that comes with air-filled tires and all-wheel suspension. It's also a good option for twins or children from different age groups and as a triple tandem, it is able to be able to handle the rough terrain. It's also a good option for parents looking for a stylish design that's as elegant as a single and is available in a range of colors for the fabric.

This iCandy model is incredibly easy to fold using a single-handed system. And although it's heavier than some of the other single-to-double travel buggy pushchairs in this review, our home tester Karolina claimed that it feels extremely maneuverable, even when she had two toddlers and a carrycot inside.

The seat can be used parent-facing and you can buy add-ons for this stroller like the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) that are perfect for newborns. Our test panel found that the seats were comfortable for toddlers and had good headrests and lumbar support. There are a variety of options to recline the seats, with the front seat adjustable in various positions and the back seat having the option of recline.

The main drawback to this kind of buggy is that it tends to be larger overall than doubles that are side-by-side and makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways, and can be tricky to maneuver around kerbs. However the suspension and wheels on these models generally are capable of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're significantly lighter than the side-by-sides, means you still have plenty of storage space. These strollers aren't easy to maneuver through supermarkets with narrow aisles, and they might struggle to carry a lot. Although it's much easier to turn the stroller around on a narrow, curving path, this can still be a hassle. Some are easier to turn than others models, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.

Convertible

The best thing about convertible double pushchairs is that they are able to adapt to the changing family needs. Most of the time, they begin as single buggies. They come with adapters that allow you to add a second child's seat, a carrycot, or (in some instances) the car seat to the frame. Some can be converted to a single buggie when your child's older age begins to walk or prefers to ride buggyboards.

This stylish tri-fold double stroller can be described as one of the lightest on our list. It can carry up to 40 lbs per child, and includes an extra storage basket in between the seats. The home testers loved the large canopy with windows that peek out with multi-position reclining seats as well as front and rear suspensions to ensure smoother rides on rough terrain. It also has a convenient cup holder for the parent and a large, easy-to access basket. The backs have tiny pockets, that are just sufficient to hold phones and a set of keys.

This lightweight, high-end side-by-side is available in more than 20 models. It also includes a second chair and carrycot. Its impressive features include an ergonomic handlebar with a high profile for better steering; front and rear suspension to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing, compact fold with handy straps that make it easy to schlep and seven-inch swivel lock front wheels and 10-inch back wheels with suspension for a smoother ride. The only downside is that you'll need to purchase an additional car seat or baby carrier.

This versatile tandem is the top choice of our home testers because it is simple to maneuver and features a large shopping basket that is accessible from both seats when in the parent-facing positions. Its lightweight weight (about the same as single pushchairs) makes it a breeze to maneuver. Reversible seats mean you can switch them around to face either direction and the clever method by which it connects the second seat or riding board to the rear is appreciated by many. Parents also admired that it accommodates car seats and infant carriers from various brands. This includes those that aren't normally compatible with other double pram stroller buggies.
