1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and robot hoover its sibling, the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They have top-of-the-line motors that can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Like other premium iRobots (including the most powerful model), they use smart mapping to produce precise floorplans that avoid obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. The robots also have the feature of Carpet Boost that increases its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare They're also particularly adept in removing pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws however, which prevent them from being our top option. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a good deal particularly if your office or home has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. Additionally, it's quiet and you can use it when you're at work or going to school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't stay on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle however. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in dealing with larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best rated robot vacuum robot hoover for carpets, but it falls behind some competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and extend them when it's in a room with carpet to prevent cross-contamination. The flex arm can be used to reach under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Professional+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop in the market to clean the entire house with only 66 percent of its battery left. It did a decent cleaning job on a variety of rooms and floors with various flooring types including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was top-notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically emptys into its base, and also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the rivals. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot vacuum cleaners uk we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work or in the evening when you are trying to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. If you're willing to put up some more volume and a little more cost this is a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home in accordance with how dirty they are.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one specific area of your home using the app or voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have number of furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very beneficial.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It is a good vacuum cleaner and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, plan a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture better. It is equipped with an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It is great at vacuuming, however it is more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums that we've examined. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
