Category A1 Rules For Motorcyclists

Category A1 rules are for those who want to ride small motorcycles. These motorcycles have capacity of up to 35 kW. They cannot be directly derived from vehicles that have more than twice their power.

Category A1 is the first of three drone categories regulated by EASA. It is applicable to aircraft that are up to a maximum takeoff weight (MTOM), which is 25 kilograms. A1 license holders are able to drive two-wheeled mopeds, as long as their cylinder capacity is no more than 125cc and their power-to-weight ratio is no more than 0.1 kg/kW. They can also ride motorcycles that have the maximum capacity of 125cc as well as trikes or quad bikes, as well as quad-bikes.

A2

If you've completed your CBT training and are looking to get a motorcycle licence, you may be eligible for a category-A1 licence. This permits you to operate on a smaller motorcycle without a sidecar. The vehicle must have a maximum cylinder capacity of 125cc and an output power of 11 kW. You can also fly in the A2 sub-category with drones that weigh a total up to 4kg, however, you must keep them at an appropriate distance from people during take-off and landing. The distances of separation are vertical, not lateral, and the drones must be kept to 30m or more horizontally away from other people, or 5m when they're in 'low-speed mode'. You also must pass the A2 Certificate of Competence (A2 CofC) test to fly in this category.

If you're looking to fly larger drones, you'll need to apply for an operator's license in the specific category. This requires you to complete the General VLOS Certificate training, the flight test, and then prepare an Operations Manual. The process for applying is similar to that of a PfCO. A2 allows you to fly drones with transitional capabilities that aren't yet CE-marked, but have been modified to lessen collision risks with people. These drones will only be allowed to be flown in A2 up until the year 2022's end. After this, they will have to adhere to the A3 rules.

This test is designed for the remote pilot to evaluate their knowledge of the technical and operation mitigations that address the extra risks of flying larger drones (class A2, weighing less than 4kg mass) close to people. The certificate of competence to fly Category A2 is given upon successful completion of the test.

There are transitional arrangements that permit older drones, that aren't certified, to be operated in the categories A1 and/or A2 for a period of two years following the introduction of the new EU regulations. The drones of the past cannot be intentionally flown above people and must be operated with an A2 CofC.

To operate a drone in this category, you must first pass the online flyer identification test and then take a theoretical exam. In addition, you must declare that you have gained some experience of your drone and pass an official declaration of competency. These requirements are similar to the driving licence model which means that drivers who first get their licence for a vehicle of a lower category can then move up to an upper category.

A4

The DOH is currently working on detailed guidelines to be used for category A4. These guidelines will be consistent with other operations, and will include specifics such as the number of dressings changed per day. These guidelines will be presented to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infections, (IATF-EID), and the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group. When they are approved, the guidelines will be vetted and approved by both the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group and the IATF-EID.

In this category, drones with a class identification label C0 and C1 are permitted to fly within a distance of 50 metres from people who are not involved. This is a category with low risk however, strict security measures are still required to minimize incidents. Drones that are not classified in either A1 or A2 must pass an additional test of theoretical knowledge to operate in this subcategory.

This examination aims to assess the level of knowledge about the dangers associated with flying drones in close proximity to people. Successful completion of the test results in a certificate of competence for this subcategory. The pilot must maintain a minimum distance of 30 metres from any non-involved person, or 5 meters when flying in slow flight mode.

If you are looking to get an motorcycle license, you must complete a certain number of training lessons in order to take the theory test and subsequently pass the practical test.
