How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Ford-New.pngThe grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error Programming Audi Key message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially when you're looking at a Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle.
