How to Replace an audi key programmer G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and audi tt replacement Key 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

happy-african-american-businessman-holdiThe ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

young-couple-holding-the-keys-of-a-new-cSome of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your new audi keys because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a typical part that is found across the audi Replacement key service 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
