World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items can be used to boost the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.
Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This value is the total of all of its leveled up perks (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades to items can be costly dependent on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.
The level of an item is a commonly used measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips for items. It also serves to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear, since PvP is limited at lower levels. Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.
Utilizing the level of an item can help players compare the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a useful indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it is capable of dealing with. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.
On PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are several theories about the method by which the level of an item is determined. One theory suggests that the level of an item is calculated by an equation that determines the worth of the stats of an item really are. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different values, and also that gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzard's real level of the item.
However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, since the level of the region the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more ilvl than those from lower-level instances.
Item Stats
Item stats are a big part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.
The upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once and items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.
Affixes can also be used to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can be used to give the item upgrade extra damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.
All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.
In addition to rerolling affixes, players can also choose which stats to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the specified range, unless it is an item that is unique or a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would have to be carried out on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items and the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly affect damage or the ability to Upgrade item items. It merely gives players a chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the early game than later ones because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the existing Luck of an item up to 140.
Additionally some items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available at the store or made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chances of success for an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their items if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The performance of an can be affected by the Luck of that item. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
